Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions:

What percent of your students attend college?  What schools do they attend?

Between 93% and 98% of our students are college bound on a given year.  Students are accepted into Cal State schools, UC schools, and many private colleges.

What SAT scores do your students earn?

For the year of 2009, our 7th graders scored 9th grade 7th month for the Median Grade Equivalent of the Complete Battery.  8th graders scored 11th grade 7th month.

Do students have to reapply to go to CCHS?

No.  Our students automatically transfer from junior high to high school.  We typically have more than a 90% return rate from 8th to 9th grade.

Is your junior high accredited?

Our high school is WASC accredited.  This assists our students in being able to transfer to other high schools and eventually college.  Our junior high students do not have any problem transferring to other junior high schools or going to other high schools so we are not accredited at this time.

What are advantages to attending CCJH?

There are many advantages to attending CCJH.  Here are some common parental concerns.

  1. Your student will form relationships with other students that can be maintained from 7th grade to high school graduation.
  2. We have many great sports programs that students can play after school.
  3. We have a very strong academic curriculum.
  4. We have a Christian environment with a very real emphasis on God’s Word and living a life pleasing to God.
  5. We have teachers that will love your student and teach them academically, as well as model for them what a real Christian looks like.
  6. We are small enough for your student to know every student and large enough for your student to find new friends as he or she grows.
  7. We are here to serve and minister to you and your family.

What is your discipline process like?

The discipline system that we use is based on points.  Students receive points for talking in class or other inappropriate behavior.  Points are accumulated, and detentions, suspensions, and expulsions occur at different point totals.  Teachers verbally tell students every time a point is given.  Parents receive an email every time a point is given.  Students may be asked to leave CCJH for certain serious behaviors or infractions.  Please see the student handbook for specifics.

What sort of curriculum do you use?

All of our teachers are strong Christian men and women.  Our curriculum is taught from a Christian worldview and perspective.  Bob Jones Press is a publisher we use in English, science, and history.  Holt is our math curriculum from 7th to 12th grade.  We use the New King James version in Bible.

What do students do for lunch?

We have a great lunch program.  The food is kid friendly.  There are many healthy choices.  Students may choose that day what they would like to eat.  On different days, choices may include turkey wraps, chicken cheese burritos, cheeseburgers, taco salads, baked potato, salads, cup of noodles, and many more.  Students can also buy food at break after first period.

Is there after school daycare?

We do not have an after school daycare for our junior high students.  The Library is open until 4 pm daily, and students can read or study there.  Typically, students should leave the campus by 3:15 pm.

Do your students use computers?

Yes.  We have a Computer Resource Lab (CRL) used by every class.  Students will go to the CRL to work, research, and use technology in a real and practical way integrated within the class’s curriculum.

What sort of technology do you have at school?

Our teachers use projectors for videos and PowerPoint presentations.  Our CRL is equipped with 30 Dell computers, a mounted projector, and a remote Interwrite pad.  Our life science class is equipped with a video microscope.  Other classrooms also have mounted projectors.  Students have access to computers in the library.

What electives do you offer?

Students in 7th grade all take Introduction to Art.  In 8th grade students begin to be able to choose electives.  Each trimester students take a new elective.  Electives include: Spanish, French, Speech and Debate, Critical Thinking, Student Life Success, Campus Service, Yearbook, and Christian Worldview.  Students must qualify for Spanish or French by earning an A in 7th grade English.

What do you offer for PE?

CCJH has PE every day.  Students will change into a PE uniform and participate in sports, calisthenics, and the Presidential Fitness Program.

What is your dress code?

Our students wear uniforms from Option B.  Students wear Option B uniforms for all clothing except shoes and hats.  See www.optionbstore.com for details.  Students may also wear flip-flops.  Skirts for girls should reach their knee.

What sort of partnership do you have with Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa?

We have a great relationship with our church.  We are a ministry of CCCM.  The junior high pastor is actively involved with our school, and many of our students attend the youth group on Wednesday night.  Our entire staff attends services at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa.
